This is The Opposite Locker - Wayback Wednesdays where we try and sort out the cool from the square. This is a discussion system detailing how cool an older car was, not how fast, fun, or frivolous it may have been, but how well it looks in the cat's pajamas. But, you may be asking, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Wayback Wednesdays are like the normal !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , save for the advanced age of the cars on the block. For this series of posts, try and perceive the vehicle as if you were living in the time period of the car's release, and then base your vote upon its coolness, taking into consideration the evolution of culture.

BMW is the only luxury German automaker that has no current supercar. Enthusiasts and Journalists alike, constantly reference the M1 to BMW in an attempt to sway them into competing for the supercar market. Currently a memorial from the 1980s with it's designer-only-has-a-ruler-at-arm's-reach-and-is-too-lazy-to-grab-any-thing-else styling, the BMW M1 failed to reach the pinnacle poster status with the likes of the Countach, Diablo, or pretty much anything else made by Lamborghini. Was the M1 really a supercar we all wish to remember so fondly? Was the M1 cool?

I would really like to know reasons why this is square.

After hearing two race prepped M1's screaming around Watkins this year, the only answer is frigid.

Im not even going to vote, there is no right answer here, some will say its frigid, and some will say square and they can both be right. I love the engine, I love the history and the idea...but Im not sold on it being a "cool" car. Interesting, you bet...but cool? Im not sure.

Yeah, who voted square? Must have been a stray vote by a near blind person.

It was raced every Grand Prix before the F1 cars were, so I guess that should count for something. Nonetheless I don't think it was as raved back in the day as it is in 2013, and despite being brash-looking it's nowhere close to the perfection of 512BBs, Countaches and Panteras, so I won't vote more than cool.

You have to remember context with this car.

If it had come out in 1988, it would be pretty boring. But it basically revolutionized mid-engine styling when it first came out, and all of those angles, scoops, slats, and matte sections of the 80s came from it, in my opinion.

Before the M1, this was 'cutting edge beauty':

After the M1, this was "cutting edge beauty":

I agree. They can keep the late-80s Countach, the LP400 is amazing, plus it was extremely low-drag and light, unlike every Lamborghini that came after it.

Also I do not know why, those big sidewalls make the LP look so much more sinister, as it should be

One of my favorite cars I've never seen. Amazing Forza whip, and something I long to own some day. I would love to see a modern follow up

Pretty much this exactly. A cool car for sure, but not frigid. For me it's too compromised as a design - No V8?

Cool, for sure, but not frigid. It has a motorsports pedigree, a unique design , it's rare and it's weird.

Still, it lacks the all-important attitude that makes a car truly Cool, truly lustworthy. It is appealing in shape rather than beautiful, its performance strong rather than electrifying. This may be the perfect car for the "cool" category.

I'd have to go Frigid. It simply is awesome. This was the car we had as a poster hanging on our wall when we were young. These were the cars we dreamed of owning. It created an era of awesome cars that will go down in history as some of the coolest designed cars ever. Frigid all the way.

Not square, too quirky. Definitely a historically important car.

It is, however, ungainly. From some angles it downright hurts to look at.

I like "before" too, but it's more of a demonstration of the change. That same M1 styling gave us these:

Or, in other words, about every good looking car from the 80s.
